COURSE CONTENT

Fashion buying is second only to design as a career option for fashion graduates and is a key component in the fashion retail business. The buyer has a central role in influencing what consumers choose to wear, as well as in determining whether a fashion retailing company ultimately succeeds or fails. Buying is a multi-faceted and demanding job, involving:

DESIGN PRACTICAL

                        Course content

  • A technical drawing shows the pattern cutter the shape of the garment when laid flat, without any artistic flare or stylisation. It is an essential requirement for creating garments or accessories.

  • Fashion Illustration is a creative interpretation of a design Idea that comprises of freestyle fashion figure and garment illustration, with the purpose of showing the vision of the designer regarding the given brief.

  •  Students are able to illustrate their creative ideas on paper by use of different mediums and techniques, also their ability to tap into their artistic creative mind is strengthened.

GARMENT CONSTRUCTION

Requirements​​

The minimum requirement for entry to Studio 05 Institute of Fashion is a National Senior Certificate, Matric Certificate, for Diploma Qualifications or Grade 10 for Higher Certificate and Short Courses.

 

These subjects form part of the qualification in Manufacturing, Engineering and related activities and are specifically for learners working in the informal sector who are currently operating, or who wish to start, their garment making business. 

 

Course content

  • Students gain complete understanding and practical expertise of a variety of styles from their designs.

  • Students will be able to assemble all categories of garments from various designs. The student must be able to choose the correct fabrics, actual details, functionality and fit of the garment for presentation. 

  • Stitching Techniques is a major factor in the quality finish of a garment. The Garment Constructor must develop finishing skills by;

  • Mastering stitching techniques.

  • Demonstrate the ability to construct a garment that fits and meet the quality finish.

 

  • The training covers the production of casual garments ranging from simple outfits to best dress.

The Studio 05 short course education cycle explained:

The short courses of Garment construction, Pattern Construction, Design Practical are in a cycle that occurs twice during the 2022 semester.   
 
There is one cycle of each subject in the first term and the other in the second term. They all have a 3-month duration. Orientation and induction are scheduled in advance a week before classes begin, in which students are given a tour of the different platforms used for online classes and physical classes.  
 
During the orientation, participants are sent the following documents:


1)Daily class layout for online classes.
2)Different online platforms explanation.

3)Orientation slides.
4)Orientation programme. 
5)Stationery list.

PATTERN CONSTRUCTION

DURATION: 3 MONTHS

Requirements

Course content

 

  • The system used to draft patterns is a flat patternmaking system.

  • The patternmaker must develop analytical skills, by analyzing the creative detailing of each design, and by studying the differences between the basic garment and the design.

 

  • Pattern drafting starts with a basic pattern plain draft, with no particular style or design, except for a few vertical lines placed here and there.

  • The four basic blocks are related to every garment in your clothing collection.

  • The basic information represents the very foundation upon which patternmaking, fit and design are based.

  • It clarifies and helps the patternmaker understand the fit of a garment relative to the pattern slope.

 

  • On completion of this module, the student is able to develop patterns that relate to most garments hanging in the wardrobe

TEXTILE DESIGN

Purpose of the course

Gives a learner a foundation in understanding fabric manipulation in order to create Textile. Includes the fundamentals on fibres and properties of fabric and yarn.

General Course Purpose

This course provides learners with essential skills and knowledge of tools and techniques in textiles required to be successful in the field of textile technology. This course is aimed at providing the learners with an understanding and working knowledge of basic industrial textiles suitable for industry application.

FASHION STYLING

DURATION: 3 MONTHS

Collection

1st intake start date: Monday 14 November 2022

2nd intake start date: Monday 13 February 2023


   Course content

  • A collection is essentially a selection of outfits and individual garments that fashion designers put together for the upcoming season.

 

  • A fashion collection can be clothing, footwear, fashion accessories, or a combination of these items. A student at this point will be able to stylize the garment or collection with accessories that work with the garment or collection.

  • Every season a fashion designer reflects predictions of upcoming trends, including colour, cut, line and proportion.

  • A collection will usually include a variety of styles, from evening wear to sportswear to outerwear. The cut, coordinating colours and design elements of each style usually tie the items together.

  • The Fashion designer gets to put together a collection to showcase at the end of Year Fashion Show.
